“The Grange: A Fraternity of Farmers that Championed Rural America” to be presented at the Nicollet County Historical Society

Saint Peter, MN (August 28, 2023) —The Nicollet County Historical Society is pleased to announce an upcoming presentation on America’s first fraternity of farmers, the Grange. Agricultural historian T.J. Malaskee will take attendees on a journey through the long-forgotten history of this radical post-Civil War Era movement that pushed for progressive measures to heal the nation through agriculture, education, equality, and social interaction.

The Grange, more formally known as the Patrons of Husbandry, was founded by Minnesota Farmer Oliver H. Kelley in 1867. It quickly became popular amongst rural farmers and eventually reached a membership of over one million men and women across the country. The movement’s mission was to promote agricultural education and teach farmers how to band together to overcome challenges and take control of their own economic destinies.

At the presentation, attendees will learn about the Grange’s fascinating history and the ways in which it has played a role in their lives today. The presentation will take place on September 7 at 2:00 PM at the Nicollet County Historical Society. Admission is $10 per adult, $7 per member, and $5 per child. Pay at the door – no advanced ticket sales.

Don’t miss this opportunity to delve into the history of the Grange and discover how it has shaped rural America. We look forward to seeing you there!
