League of Women Voters and Nicollet County Historical Society Present “We the People: Then and Now”

Saint Peter, MN (June 3, 2026)– The League of Women Voters of St. Peter and the Nicollet County Historical Society will present We the People: Then and Now, an interactive program exploring the founding documents that shaped the United States and the questions they continue to raise today.

The program will take place Saturday, June 13, from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. at the Saint Peter Community Center, Room 219. RSVPs are strongly encouraged and will open June 1 at nchsmn.org/events.

Facilitated by Dr. Kate Knutson, Gustavus Adolphus College Political Science Professor, the program will guide participants through the Declaration of Independence, the Articles of Confederation, the U.S. Constitution, and the Bill of Rights. Through brief presentations, small group discussions, and interactive activities, participants will consider what these documents said at the time, what they left unresolved, and how they continue to shape American democracy.

As the nation approaches its 250th anniversary, We the People: Then and Now offers an opportunity to revisit familiar documents with fresh eyes. The program will begin with the ideas, conflicts, and historical events that helped lead to the American Revolution and the Declaration of Independence. Participants will also learn about the Articles of Confederation, the country’s first attempt at a national government, and how its weaknesses helped lead to the creation of the U.S. Constitution.

The session will then turn to the Constitution and Bill of Rights, inviting participants to reflect on the goals named in the Preamble, the rights protected by the first ten amendments, and the ongoing work of democracy. The program will close with a discussion about what “We the People” means today, how that idea has been challenged and expanded over time, and what constitutional change might look like in the future.
