TSHC Field Trip

EXPLORE | YOUR HISTORY

Students will explore the striking exhibits found within the Treaty Site History Center as well as the landmarks along the Traverse des Sioux historic site.

Tours bring learners of all ages back in time to 1800s Traverse des Sioux to better their understanding of the way of life for the Dakota and Euro-Americans.

Students learn Traverse des Sioux was a gateway and a gathering place for thousands of years, elements of Dakota culture, and aspects of prairie life. They will examine the many factors of the 1851 Treaty of Traverse des Sioux, the debt it brought to the Dakota, and its consequences.

WHAT WILL STUDENTS LEARN?

The tour presents a valid learning experience outside the classroom.

Students will:

  • Explain and analyze why settlers came to Minnesota.
  • Understand why and how Minnesota Indians negotiated treaties.
  • Develop a chronological sequence of events for this historical era.
  • Identify factors that drew people to their local communities.
