DESCRIPTION:The Treaty Site History Center stands where the 1851 Treaty of Traverse des Sioux was signed 175 years ago. This Treaty between Dakota leaders and U.S. government representatives added millions of acres of Dakota land to the U.S.\, significantly impacting Dakota communities and the future of southern Minnesota. Our permanent exhibit interprets this watershed event and its lasting impact on Dakota communities and the future of southern Minnesota. \nExplore this history during a guided exhibit tour at the Treaty Site History Center.\nDuring the tour\, you’ll learn about the Dakota\, explore why the treaty was negotiated\, what it changed\, and how its legacy continues to shape this region today. \nIf you live\, work\, or raise a family in southern Minnesota\, this history shaped the place you know. \nTours are $5 per person and free for NCHS members. Space is limited to 20 participants. RSVP is required. \n\nTours require a minimum of 3 registered participants. If that minimum is not met\, registered attendees will be notified by email 48 hours in advance and offered the option to reschedule or visit that day for a self-guided tour at the tour admission price.

Since then\, he has cared for the Society’s archival collections\, assisted thousands of researchers\, and shared his deep knowledge of Nicollet County history with generosity and care. Light refreshments will be provided. \n\n5:00 p.m. – Doors open\n5:30 p.m. – Business meeting\n6:00 p.m. – Program\n\nAbout our program and speaker:\n\nJoin Stephanie Hess for an engaging overview of the Minnesota Digital Library (MDL)\, a free website full of digitized historical materials from contributors across the state. For over twenty years\, MDL has partnered with organizations like the Nicollet County Historical Society to digitize their collections and make them accessible online. In this presentation\, Stephanie will demonstrate how to search MDL’s collection of over 61\,000 unique photographs\, documents\, maps\, A/V recordings\, and more. She will explore some of MDL’s creative projects and share highlights of unique Nicollet County history that can be found in MDL. \nStephanie is the Digital Curator for the Minnesota Digital Library. With a background in local history and exhibit development\, she oversees the digital storytelling projects for MDL\, conducts K12 educational outreach\, and manages MDL’s social media accounts. The Minnesota Digital Library is made possible in part by the people of Minnesota through an appropriation to the Minnesota Historical Society from the Minnesota Legacy Amendment’s Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund.

SUMMARY:Stripped of Citizenship: American-born Women\, Marriage\, and Expatriation in Minnesota
DESCRIPTION:As a result of federal legislation in 1907\, American-born women lost their citizenship when they married alien men. Derivative citizenship resulted in thousands of Minnesota women becoming aliens in their own country. Digital tools and databases make learning who these women were easier. Scholars to date have focused on American women who married German nationals because all enemy aliens—including American-born women married to alien men from Germany and some of its allies—had to register with the federal government. Thus\, there is a clear paper trail for some states. Such a trail exists in Minnesota\, too\, because of a unique 1918 order that required all aliens (and not just enemy aliens) to register in the state. \nIn this presentation\, “Stripped of Citizenship: American-born Women\, Marriage\, and Expatriation in Minnesota\,” Lori Ann Lahlum explores the expatriation of American-born women in Minnesota who married aliens and the ways in which we can reclaim their stories. \nAdmission is $5.00 for non-members and free for NCHS members.

SUMMARY:Our Landscape as a Time Machine: St. Peter's Geologic Past
DESCRIPTION:Most of the time\, we walk or drive along our landscape without much thinking about the details. The familiar trees\, hills\, and rivers look ordinary to us. Perhaps we forget\, or have never considered\, that this landscape has a story to tell. This very place on Earth (and every other place) has experienced 4.6 billion years of time! To a geologist\, the landscape and the material beneath it tell us about the ancient processes that formed it. \nEight thousand years ago\, St. Peter was the site of a raging river\, draining a giant lake near present-day Moorhead. Fifteen thousand years ago\, our town was covered by a mile-thick ice sheet. One hundred million years ago\, dinosaurs wandered through unfamiliar forests. And five hundred million years ago\, St. Peter was a tropical paradise covered by a warm\, clear ocean. How do we know? Each of these time intervals left behind geologic evidence – rocks that formed in the geologic past and that reflect the conditions of the time. \nThis presentation will introduce participants to St. Peter’s geologic history through the lens of geologic maps. You’ll learn how maps help us reconstruct the past and how they help us locate natural resources. Finally\, you’ll learn about some places nearby that reveal the evidence of our geologic past. \nAbout the presenter: Dr. Julie Bartley is a Professor and Co-chair in Environmental Geography and Earth sciences at Gustavus Adolphus College. She teaches Geology\, Environmental Studies\, and Geography. She holds an A.B. in Chemistry from Bryn Mawr College and an M.S. and Ph.D. in Geology from UCLA.
