The mission of the Nicollet County Historical Society is to preserve, protect and interpret the rich history of Nicollet County and Minnesota. We achieve this by interpreting our historic sites through tours and exhibits, creating exciting and educational programs for the public, and by maintaining our collection of historic items.
Things to Consider
The Society collects items that contribute directly to our mission to preserve, protect and interpret Nicollet County’s history. Most importantly these items should have a story. These stories provide historical context that makes items interesting and helpful to museum staff in the future.
Please consider a few things before you bring item(s) in for initial review. Do you know who created this item? Who owned it? Do you know how old it is or when it was made? If its use is not clear, please be ready to explain what was it used for.
By answering these questions, we are putting pieces of a puzzle together that will give us a tangible representation of the story of Nicollet County.
If you have an item(s) you’d like to donate, please call the Research Coordinator or the Executive Director to make an appointment before dropping off the item(s). Simply leaving them with us does not guarantee their acceptance into the collection. If the item meets initial criteria for our collection, we require donors to fill out a Temporary Deposit form with pertinent information on the item(s). Our Collections Committee reviews all items left for temporary deposit and has the final decision on which items are accepted. Those items not accepted will be returned to the donor or otherwise disposed of in accordance with the donor’s wishes.
