SUMMARY:Film Series | McCarthy
DESCRIPTION:McCarthy chronicles the rise and fall of Joseph McCarthy\, the Wisconsin Senator who would test the limits of American decency and democracy. Free of restraint or oversight\, he conducted a crusade against those he accused of being Communists and enemies of the state\, a chilling campaign marked by groundless accusations\, bullying intimidation\, grandiose showmanship\, and cruel victimization. Finally\, after years in the headlines\, he was brought down by his own excesses and overreach. He died a broken man\, but his name lived on. For more than half a century\, it has been linked to an all-too-familiar phenomenon\, the modern-day witch hunt we call McCarthyism. \nThe film’s runtime is 120 minutes \nTrailer: https://www.pbs.org/wgbh/americanexperience/films/mccarthy/#part01 \nThe Nicollet County Historical Society and Saint Peter Community and Family Education present our fall lineup of documentary films! The public is welcome to join us for these free films at the Treaty Site History Center.

SUMMARY:Film Series | A Squirrel's Guide to Success
DESCRIPTION:The squirrel family\, from tiny chipmunks to big prairie dogs\, is one of the most widespread on Earth\, so what is the secret to their success? There are almost 300 species of squirrels that can glide through the air\, outwit rattlesnakes\, and survive the coldest temperatures of any mammal. Uncover the extraordinary abilities of these cheeky nut lovers as a filmmaker puts their problem-solving to the test on a specially designed obstacle course. Join some of the world’s top squirrel scientists who are making groundbreaking discoveries – from the brainy fox squirrel who can remember the location of 9\,000 nuts\, to the acrobatic gray squirrel whose tree-top leaps are the basis of new designs in robotics. And see the world through the eyes of an orphan red squirrel called Billy\, as he grows up and develops all the skills he will need to be released back to the wild. \nRuntime is 60 minutes. \n\nThe Nicollet County Historical Society and Saint Peter Community and Family Education present a new season of documentary films! These documentaries inform\, challenge ideas\, and create conversation. Films are shown at the Nicollet County Historical Society and are free and open to the public. \n

SUMMARY:Film Series | The War on Disco
DESCRIPTION:The War on Disco explores the culture war that erupted over the spectacular rise of disco music. Originating in underground Black and gay clubs\, disco had unseated rock as America’s most popular music by the late 1970s. But many diehard rock fans viewed disco\, with its repetitive beat and culture that emphasized pleasure\, as shallow and superficial. A story that’s about much more than music\, The War on Disco explores how the powerful anti-disco backlash revealed a cultural divide that to some seemed to be driven by racism and homophobia. The hostility came to a head on July 12\, 1979\, when a riot broke out at “Disco Demolition Night” during a baseball game in Chicago. \nThe film’s runtime is 60 min. \nTrailer: https://www.pbs.org/…/americ…/features/war-disco-teaser/ \nThe Nicollet County Historical Society and Saint Peter Community and Family Education present our fall lineup of documentary films! The public is welcome to join us for these free films at the Treaty Site History Center.

SUMMARY:Strengthening Community Through Historic Preservation
DESCRIPTION:May is Historic Preservation Month! The 2024 Preservation Month theme is “People Saving Places” to shine the spotlight on everyone doing the work of saving places—in ways big and small. To recognize Preservation Month\, the Nicollet County Historical Society is hosting a presentation by Michael Koop from the State Historic Preservation Office on Thursday\, May 16\, at 6:00 p.m.\, entitled “Strengthening Community Through Historic Preservation.” Historic preservation involves: \n\nRecognizing places from our past that are important to the American people.\nCaring for them.\nUsing them to enrich our lives.\n\nThese special places reveal every aspect of our country’s origins and development. Historic places help us understand who we are and the meaning of our accomplishments and shortcomings. Preservation\, above all\, protects and maintains our past for future generations. Efforts to conserve historic resources are founded on the involvement of many individuals and organizations\, including our local community. The real action in historic preservation is at the local level since the results of survey\, planning\, and evaluation work must be integrated into other broad planning efforts. Hear about the variety of work done by Minnesota’s Heritage Preservation Commissions to create a range of tools to educate and reach people and to help conserve important historic properties across the state.

SUMMARY:Film Series | Leave it to Beavers
DESCRIPTION:A growing number of scientists\, conservationists\, and grass-roots environmentalists have come to regard beavers as overlooked tools when it comes to reversing the disastrous effects of global warming and worldwide water shortages. Once valued for their fur or hunted as pests\, these industrious rodents are seen in a new light through the eyes of this novel assembly of beaver enthusiasts and “employers” who reveal the ways in which the presence of beavers can transform and revive landscapes. Using their skills as natural builders and brilliant hydro-engineers\, beavers are being recruited to accomplish everything from finding water in a bone-dry desert to recharging water tables and coaxing life back into damaged lands. 60 minutes. SUMMARY:Film Series | New Eye on the Universe

When – and how – did the first stars and galaxies form? And can we see the fingerprints of life in the atmospheres of distant worlds–or even within our own solar system? 54 minutes. SUMMARY:Film Series | Groundbreakers
DESCRIPTION:Film Description \nThrough the eyes of women athletes who changed the system\, the new two-hour documentary Groundbreakers celebrates 50 years of female excellence in sports. Hosted by sports icon and champion of equality Billie Jean King\, the film weaves together the first-hand stories of eight icons to discuss how Title IX and their own achievements forever changed the course of women’s sports. \nThe interviews pair an athlete at the top of her game today with an athlete whose achievements helped pave the way for those who followed.
